This article is about what I use to produce this site (excluding my Leica Q). I will be focusing on my Apple setup which include theĀ Apple watch, iPhone 6, iPad mini retina & MacBook retina. I have been using Apple products since the year 2000 when I bought my first iMac, it was a G3 400-mhz with firewire designed for video editing, boy was it exciting getting that machine.
Now lets take a closer look at what I’m currently using:
Lets start with the Apple Watch, this is the original watch in grey and it is the sports version, I have enjoyed using this watch and used it everyday for exactly 1 year. I really enjoyed having notifications arriving on my wrist and the little extra features that Apple bought out as the OS improved. However I currently only use it when I lift weights, it has become a glorified timer š I’m hoping that Apple will improve the design with version 3,Ā I decided to skip version 2 as the design was exactly the same and I’m looking for a thinner design as well as more power. Overall it was enjoyable using the watch and maybe I will go back to using it as my daily watch, however I did find I was missing my IWC Aquatimer 2000, it is such a wonderful watch it is a shame to keep it at home in a box, so IWC are winning at the moment.
Secondly comes the iPhone, I have purchased quite a few of these over the years: iPhone 3G, 4, 5 and finally the 6. I decided to skip the 7 which evenĀ surprised me but I usually like to buy a iPhone every two years when a new design is released however the 7 just felt like another 6 (sorry Apple). I’m holding out for the 8 and I’m even considering a plus! The current model I have is 64GB and although it is great I need more space so 128GB is also on the upgrade list. This iPhone has been great up until a few months ago and now it has really bad battery life. Other than that it has a good camera, great screen and it is pretty fast. At this point I should also mention that I really like space grey and having everythingĀ as a matching set is a mustĀ š
The iPad, I bought the original iPad, it was such an exciting purchase, it wasĀ the 3G version and I loved it, I then bought iPad 2 wifi version which I also really enjoyed, then by the time the 3rd one came out I got a bit bored so I didn’t buy anymore. Then the mini was released, this was a exciting prospect but the screen just wasn’t right, I waited until the iPad mini 2 was released and this was the 3rd iPad for me! I really enjoy the form factor of the mini, for me it is the perfect size for viewing photos, watching films and taking notes. That is all I really use it for, oh and playing Plants vs Zombies of course ;-).
My final piece Apple even though not my current laptop is the MacBook 12″ Retina. (Please see my review of my MacBook 15″ 2016 model with touch-bar, yes I know there are many people that really don’t like this machine but as you will see from my review it works really well for me). Anyway before that I was using the super thin MacBook 2015 retina 12″. I have always been a fan of small slim computers and this MacBook is the best yet, it is so thin and light, it is a joy to carry and take with you and ideal for writing articles. However for me it let me down in terms of speed, ever since I got my Leica Q I was struggling with the 24 megapixel images in DNG format that it produced. I found it a struggle in Adobe Lightroom so for that reason I had to upgrade, which was a shame as the MacBook 12″ as a portable laptop is the best of best in terms of general use and portability.
To conclude I really enjoy using Apple products and my Apple setup has always served me well, I have had many iMac and MacBook machines and I’m currently enjoying my MacBook Pro. However I am disappointed that Apple has really lost its focus when it comes to Pro users, it has really missed a trick by not upgrading theĀ 2013 Mac Pro line. One of the best looking computers I have ever seen. I wish I had ordered a 6 core version in 2013 and I would be writing this article from that very machine but it wasn’t meant to be. As time went on and the Mac Pro line wasn’t updated I couldn’t justify the price for old technology so I had to let that dream go. However I am happy with my current MacBook Pro and I look forward to Apple hopefully bringing out a Apple iPhone, iPad mini and watch that I will want to hopefully buy.
